Rustler Steak House was one of those no-frills Philly-area family steakhouse memories from the 1970s and 1980s — a place for an affordable steak dinner, baked potato, salad bar, bread, and those classic checkered napkins before casual dining chains took over every shopping plaza. The Rustler chain was founded in 1963 by former football player Joe Campanella, later operated by Gino’s Hamburgers from 1971 to 1982, then sold after Marriott acquired Gino’s; by 1985, the remaining Rustler locations were sold to Collins Foods. Philly-area memories often point to locations around Northeast Philadelphia, including Robbins and the Boulevard and Knights Shopping Center, making Rustler the kind of place locals remember from childhood dinners, mall errands, and that old-school steak, potato, and salad night out.
