For generations of Central Massachusetts residents, the Flying Yankee Restaurant in Auburn was a classic roadside landmark, welcoming travelers at the busy intersection of Routes 12 and 20 from around 1953 until roughly 1990. The diner was remembered for hearty, no-frills American comfort food—the kind of place where locals stopped for breakfast, burgers, sandwiches, fries, and traditional diner meals*—but its most unforgettable feature was the spectacular Flying Yankee neon sign towering above the highway. The colorful sign featured the restaurant’s name wrapped around an animated rocket with a flashing red-neon tail, a tribute to Auburn’s own Dr. Robert Goddard, who launched the world’s first liquid-fueled rocket there in 1926; the Flying Yankee name itself recalled the famous New England streamliner train. Long after the restaurant disappeared, that glowing rocket remains a cherished piece of Route 20 nostalgia and an instantly recognizable reminder of the golden age of New England roadside dining.
