The Civic Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was an iconic multi-purpose indoor arena in the city’s Lower Hill District, best known as the longtime home of the Pittsburgh Penguins team and affectionately nicknamed “The Igloo.” Opened in 1961 with a futuristic retractable stainless-steel domed roof—the first of its kind on a major sports venue—it hosted thousands of events including concerts, sports championships, circuses, and rallies over nearly five decades. Renamed Mellon Arena from 1999 to 2010 under a naming rights agreement, it closed in 2010 after the Penguins moved to a new facility, and was subsequently demolished by early 2012; its legacy remains as an architectural and cultural landmark in Pittsburgh history.
