Burger Chef was an American fast-food chain that operated from the mid-1950s until the brand disappeared in the 1990s—generally traced from its beginnings in Indianapolis in 1954, with the first Burger Chef restaurant opening in 1957, to the final branded location closing in 1996. It grew far beyond Indiana and became a familiar sight across much of the United States, especially in the Midwest and smaller-town America, and at one point had hundreds of locations in 39 states, with some expansion into Canada as well. For many people, Burger Chef feels like a perfect snapshot of nostalgic mid-century fast-food culture: bright signs, family burger runs, kid-focused meals, and a time when stopping for fries, a shake, and a burger felt like a genuine event rather than just another errand.
